Our Pastor: Monsignor David H. Benz
Monsignor David H. Benz was born on 27 April 1943 in Chester, Pennsylvania. He attended St. Michael Grade School and St. James Catholic High School in Chester. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in April 1962 and upon completion of basic training was assigned to Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland AFB, Texas. He was then assigned to Albrook AFB, Panama and Howard AFB, Panama. In 1965, he was assigned to Than San Ut AB, Vietnam as a paramedic. Upon completion of his enlistment in 1966, Father Benz returned to Pennsylvania and was graduated from Drexel Institute of Technology with a Bachelor in Accounting in 1967. He entered St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, Overbrook in 1967. He graduated in 1971 with a Bachelors Degree in Philosophy and in 1975 with a Masters of Divinity Degree. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia in May of 1975. He, also, received a Masters of Sociology degree from Temple University in June of 1975.
His assignments in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia include Assistant Pastor at St. Athanasius Parish, West Oak Lane; St. Francis of Assisi, Germantown; St. Rose of Lima, West Philadelphia; Our Lady of the Holy Souls, St. John the Evangelist, Most Precious Blood, Philadelphia; and Professor at Bishop McDevitt High School, Wyncote.
Monsignor Benz also served as Assistant Pastor at St. Paschal Baylon Parish in Oakland, California. He joined the United States Air Force as a Chaplain in 1986. His first assignment as a Chaplain was Offutt AFB, NE. He served at Kunsan AB, Korea from June 1987 to June 1988. Following Korea, he was assigned to Vance AFB, OK from June 1988 to June 1990. He was assigned to Alconbury AB, United Kingdom from June 1990 to June 1992 where he distinguished himself by establishing programs to take care of deployed spouses during Operation Desert Storm. From June 1992 to June 1993, Father Benz was assigned to Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC. Upon completion of the Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) course, he was assigned to Luke AFB, AZ from June 1993 to October 1996. Monsignor's last military assignment was at Dyess AFB, Texas from October, 1996 to May 1999 when he retired from military service.
His military awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, the Air Force Good Conduct Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal with bronze star.
Upon returning to the Archdiocese of Philadelphia in July 1999, Father Benz was assigned as Parochial Vicar at St. Patrick Parish, Kennett Square, PA. He celebrated his silver jubilee in the priesthood there in May, 2000. In June, 2001, he was assigned as Parochial Vicar at St. Jude Parish in Chalfont. In May 2002, he was appointed Pastor, St. Philomena Parish, Lansdowne, PA. He was installed as Pastor on 30 June, 2002. Monsignor Benz was made a Prelate of Honor with the title Reverend Monsignor on 12 June 2005. Msgr. Benz resigned St. Philomena Parish on 25 January 2008 as was named Pastor Emeritus. He subsequently was assigned to St. John the Evangelist Parish, Morrisville, PA as an Assistant Pastor with the title Senior Priest. Msgr. Benz was appointed Pastor of St. Therese Parish, Mt. Airy on 25 January 2010 and installed as Pastor on 14 February 2010.
